چکیده

Mirror neurons are brain systems found in monkeys and humans that respond similarly to actions and to the perception of actions of others. This paper explores the implications of mirror neurons for several important philosophical problems, including knowledge of other minds, the nature of empathy, and moral motivation. It argues that mirror neurons provide a direct route to other minds, empathy, and moral motivation that complements the more familiar route based on conscious, verbal inference. INTRODUCTION The discovery of mirror neurons has been hailed as one of the major recent breakthroughs in neuroscience, with possible implications for the explanation of many important cognitive functions, including action understanding, imitation, language, and empathy. Mirror neurons were first identified in the 1990s by Giacomo Rizzolatti and his colleagues at the University of Parma (Rizzolatti and Craighero, 2004). They found that monkey prefrontal cortex contains a particular class of neurons that discharge both when the monkey does a particular action and when it observes another individual doing a particular action. Similar classes of neurons have been found in humans, capable of mirroring not only physical actions but also pain and disgust. This paper is an exploration of the epistemological and ethical significance of mirror neuron mechanisms. After briefly reviewing the recent neuroscience literature on

Empathy and the Mirror Neuron System: An Electroencephalographic Study

Specific Aims: Empathy, the ability to feel and understand another’s pain, pleasure, and feelings is vital to surviving the social circus of everyday life. The idea of putting yourself in someone else’s shoes is at the core of human relationships. Empathy is why charity is possible, why people go out of their way to selflessly help others in need, or why people can connect with each other on an...

The role of shared neural activations, mirror neurons, and morality in empathy – A critical comment

In the last decade, the phenomenon of empathy has received widespread attention by the field of social neuroscience. This has provided fresh insights for theoretical models of empathy, and substantially influenced the academic and public conceptions about this complex social skill. The present paper highlights three key issues which are often linked to empathy, but which at the same time might ...

Pictures of pain: their contribution to the neuroscience of empathy.

The study of empathy, a translation of the term 'Einfühlung', originated in 19th century Germany in the sphere of aesthetics, and was followed by studies in psychology and then neuroscience. During the past decade the links between empathy and art have started to be investigated, but now from the neuroscientific perspective, and two different approaches have emerged. Recently, the primacy of th...

Mirror Neurons and (Inter)subjectivity: Typological Evidence from East Asian Languages

Language is primarily constituted by action and interaction based on sensorimotor information. This paper demonstrates the nature of subjectivity and intersubjectivity through the neural mechanism and typological evidence of sentence-final particles from East Asian languages and extends to the discussion of the relationship between them. I propose that intersubjecivity is a kind of embedded or ...
